Volcanoes, cloud forest, two oceans. We explain what each experience is really like, where it works best, and what to check before you book.
A morning on Arenal’s lava trails feels nothing like an afternoon in Monteverde’s cloud forest, and neither resembles a Caribbean day in Puerto Viejo. The best tour depends on where you’re staying, the month, and how you like to move.
This guide starts with the experience, then shows you the regions where it shines and the details that separate a great operator from an average one.
Meet the regions →Each pick says who it suits and what to verify on the listing: pickup, inclusions, group size and cancellation.
Images illustrate the destination, not a specific operator, vehicle or group.
Most tours include pickup only within a set radius. Pick a base, then plan the days around it.

On the Pacific coast and Central Valley, late December to April is dry season (verano) and busiest. May to November brings sunny mornings, warm afternoon showers, fuller rafting rivers and fewer crowds—with a mid-year dry spell (veranillo) in July. The Caribbean coast follows its own schedule, with its sunniest, calmest weather in September–October and February–March. Select your travel month.

Two listings can share a title and still be very different days. Compare these on the provider page.
Staying inside a tour’s pickup zone can save two hours of driving a day. Match location first, then the room.
